Route to Roots: Sketches of Shared European Heritage Through Past and Present is a Comenius partnership project based on pupil participation and involving pupils (aged 10-14) of primary and lower secondary schools in Italy, Portugal, England, Poland, Cyprus and Spain.
The project focuses on the portion of shared heritage that reached the regions to which the partner schools belong, over different periods and through diverse circumstances. Singling out common elements in otherwise different landscapes and cultures to analyse what influence they have had in shaping today’s societies is meant to help pupils become aware of the deeper roots linking the countries to one another, build up a deeper sense of European citizenship, and fight Euroskepticism.
Roman urban structures, buildings and architectural elements are to be chosen by the partner schools for their pupils to study, compare and creatively represent through artistic work. Pupils from all the partner schools will collaborate in the creation of a PP presentation of shared heritage items, a calendar, and art products to be exhibited in the website of the Project.
Pupils and staff involved in the partnership are to interact and work together, both at distance, regularly sharing their findings on a dedicated platform (E-Twinning Twinspace/ Facebook), and at plenary project meetings. The visualization of common elements in different European realities is aimed at promoting the awareness and appreciation of shared values and sociocultural diversity at the same time.
Besides expected improvements in ICT, foreign language and visual arts, the project is also looked upon as means of increasing self-esteem and as motivation measures for pupils with special needs and at risk of school failure and educational exclusion.
